Can Art Fight Injustice
Your Art and Justice Project will consist of 3 major components:
- A CREATIVE PIECE that communicates and informs the audience about a modern issue of social justice that resonates with you. Your art should be informed in some way by our historical study of the New Negro Movement as well as your examination of current activist art and its social context.
- An ARTIST VISION STATEMENT that explores your process as well as how your ideas, inspiration and voice are reflected in the piece. (details below)
- An ABSTRACT – a one paragraph brief statement that discusses the meaning of your work that will be placed next to it in our installation. Abstract should be cut out and mounted on backing board or paper for display.
More Details on the CREATIVE PIECE (note, all work must be original composition)
Options for the Format or Medium of your CREATIVE PIECE may reflect the modes of artistic creation that flourished during the time of the NNM or new forms of artistic expression that reflect our present technology and society; these include:
- Written or Spoken Word
- A short story
- Poetry/spoken word - a series of poems (expect to be asked to perform them)
- One-act play or dramatic monologue
- Visual Arts – ideally no smaller than 11” x 14” and needs to be done on canvas, art paper (mounted on backing board) or framed. Sculpture should be free standing and/or securely mounted to a base.
- Painting
- Drawing
- Photography
- Sculpture
- Digital art – must follow guidelines for original work
- Music
- Dance
Grading Guidelines for the Content of your CREATIVE PIECE - the following criteria will be used when assessing your work on this project:
- Elements and Principles: Project shows indication of careful planning with evidence of preliminary sketches or rough drafts
- Creativity and Originality: Project shows YOUR creativity and originality – not just the copying of someone else’s ideas
- Concept or ideas: Project connects in clear and thoughtful ways to our guiding question – Can art fight injustice?
- Craftsmanship: Project shows evidence of an effort to apply craftsmanship in terms of chosen medium
More Details on the ARTIST VISION STATEMENT
The Content of your statement must include responses to the following questions:
- How does your piece reflect your thinking about the New Negro Movement and the modern social justice issue that resonates with you?
- What was your inspiration?
- Where are you in this piece? Why is this issue important to you?
- Why did you select this medium? What were your struggles with it?
- Briefly describe the process you went through to create this work.
Your statement must adhere to the following Format:
- Be 500-750 words, typed, 12 point, standard, readable font
- Be proofread for spelling and grammar!
CREATIVE PIECES and ARTIST VISION STATEMENTS are due on Friday, March 16, 2018; exhibition night is Thursday, March 22.
Projects need to be completed by the due date since they will be publically exhibited and it takes time to create the installation. No late projects will be accepted without prior consultation and permission of your teacher.

I don’t think it’s a given that art is a form of protest, but every creative protest is a form of art and every platform for art can be a powerful stage for creative and effective acts.
